Questionnaires and Guidelines for Qualitative Interviews

The quantitative survey

The survey conducted as part of DefiChine project aims two groups of men: one living in rural areas at the time of the survey; the other originating from the same region but who migrated to a city before the survey. Two distinct questionnaires (using filters) were developed for each of these two groups: one for married men and/or those cohabiting with their wife/partner, the other intended for single men and those divorced or widowed but not remarried. The questionnaires include about 250 questions (some of which including filters) and are divided into seven parts:

1) Part 1 (24-39 questions) asks information about the personal characteristics of the respondents.

2) Part 2 (31 questions) asks information about gender roles as perceived by the respondents.

3) Part 3 (5-45 questions) asks three sets of questions: marital situation, mate choice, and effects of prolonged bachelorhood as perceived by the respondents.

4) Part 4 (40-85 questions) asks information about sexual norms and behaviors. It is self-administered (CAPI system).

5) Part 5 (7-14 questions) asks information about knowledge and practices regarding sexually-transmitted infections.

6) Part 6 (11-14 questions) asks information about social relationships and leisure activities of the respondents.

7) In Part 7, a module is devoted to key demographic and social developments likely to impact respondents’ life.

Guidelines for the qualitative interviews

The qualitative interviews were conducted among 50 people, including 25 living in rural areas at the time of the interviews (15 men and 10 women) and 25 others originating from the same region, but who migrated to a city. The aim of the qualitative survey is to better understand the norms and practices in terms of mate selection and gender relations.
